Cenith Opkis

I couldn't find any info about any of the artists on these discs.

With the Sioux Valley Barn Dance Gang.  Was it an actual thing or just made up as a name for her backing group?

Maynard Britton

This record was given to me by a record dealer.  I saw it sitting on top of a stack of his recent arrivals.  It had a crack that rendered it unplayable, so I asked if I could have it and he gave it to me.  I posted on the 78rpm facebook group, to see if anyone knew how to repair such a crack.  I got a reply from a guy named Don Wilson in Philadelphia, PA.  He has a side-business making reproductions of pre-war 78s.  I sent the disc to him, and he was able to heat it up with his lab equipment, allowing the shellac to be pushed back together.  He then applied a bonding agent and a bit of candle wax as filler.  I got the disc back and am so happy with the result.  Being able to play this disc is really something.  It has a new life.  So a big thanks to Don for all he has done.

The audio from this disc hasn't been issued on CD, as far as I know.  Maynard Britton made two records for Gennett, according to Tony Russel's book.

Bob Williams And The Southlanders

In the deadwax there is etched a C with an M inside it, and the number 96 above.  I've never seen that pressing identifier, so if anyone has an idea, let me know.

Apparently this was recorded in 1957:

I chatted with C.W. Kendall today on facebook.  He tells me that the label was owned by himself and Jimmy Bowen.  They made a mistake at Kay Bank pressing plant, as it was supposed to be Ken-Bo.

Paul & Archie

[photos courtesy of Discogs, since I don't have the LP cover.]

Paul Shultz and Archie Heikkila.

I found this LP in another LP cover which was mismatched.  Didn't notice it until I got home.  Easy mistake since the album cover it was found in was also by Paul & Archie.  I believe they made two LPs in the late 1970s.  Will post the other LP "Golden Country Memories" disc as soon as I find it.

I like the sound of these guys.  Reminds me a lot of Jimmie Driftwood for some reason.

Archie Heikkila was born in Cedar Valley township in 1928 and died in 2014 in Floodwood, Minnesota in 2014. No info could be found about Paul Schulz, so he may still be alive.

Mary Beth

This post is in response to an email request by the owner of the Flame Cafe's grandson, Marc.  Abe Percansky was the owner's real name, but he was also known as Abe Perkins (see bside label credit).

Marc writes:
"I grew up in the Flame the 1st 12 years of my life. I am 51 years old. It closed in 1978. It sure was a one of a kind place! Folks are still talking about it nearly 40 years after it closed."

Marc hopes to someday devote a website to the Flame Cafe and it's long storied past.  Here are a few photos for now:

Another post from the same label:

If anyone knows of other releases on this label, let me know.

Ralph Beebeau

Obituary from Star Tribune
Excerpt from another obituary:
"Ralph BeBeau was an entertainer. "Music involved Dad's entire life," said his daughter, Pamela Oettel. His band and his disc jockey gig were his passions for many years. His sequined suit, cowboy boots and large belt buckles were part of his persona. He was known as the Singing DJ to his radio audience. BeBeau died May 28 of liver cancer. He was 75.
He was heavily involved with music from the 1960s to the `80s. When he became a radio DJ, he worked for country stations KANO in Anoka, KRBI in St. Peter, WMIN in St. Paul and KTCR in Minneapolis. He also played guitar and bass and sang with his band, the Nite Riders.
The Nite Riders appeared in VFW and American Legion halls and bars across the Twin Cities area."

I couldn't find any info about any 601 bar.  Must have been a roadside joint that Dudley stopped at during his truck driving days.  Ralph's last name is mispelled here.  Correct spelling was Bebeau.  Born in 1930, died in 2005.

I've only seen two records of his, this being the other one:

The Deutschmeisters

In defense of Polka music:
Polka was turned into a dirty word by the rock n roll generation.  Record dealers at record shows don't go near it, record stores put it in the free box.  I wish it wasn't this way, because I enjoy listening to it, and it has a long tradition.  Generations of Scandinavians expressed themselves and entertained their friends and community members with this music.  I respect anyone who learns how to play an instrument, and gets people to come together and dance to the sound of it.

I have over 400 polka records (78s, 45s and LPs) and I enjoy them.  It's just unassuming and fun music, and admittedly a little goofy.
