Earl Montgomery with Shorty Underwood and the Brushcutters

Slim Willet recorded these songs himself, but not sure if they were released.  They show up on the Boppin Hillbilly disc in 2003.

Fred Boyd (2nd post)

This label was made purely to supply Seeburg jukeboxes with cheap records.  I mostly pass these by when I see them, but I've always liked the song Moody River.  Originally written by Chase Webster and issued as Southern Sound 101, the song became a hit for Pat Boone in 1961.  So this version is probably not long afterward.  In my opinion the song really suffers when you remove that piano refrain.

Dale Allen & The Rebel Rousers

This copy belonged to the manager/arranger of the band, John Syck.  The number 10762 is either the date it was recorded or the date it was pressed.  As you can sort of see in the image, the labels of the 45 were damaged at some point and restored by a dealer who lives in Duluth.  He's pretty good at finding matching paint.  He told me in the early 1980s he went to John Syck's home in Duluth and bought his last 10 copies of this record.

I was also told by the same dealer that Dale Allen was either sued or threatened with a lawsuit by Duane Eddy for violation of copyright in using the name Rebel Rousers, so the name was changed to The Titans in 1963.  Included in the folder are some but not all of their recordings.

This page has some good photos, (wow, go go dancers) and other info: http://www.jiffyjeff.net/bands.htm

Andy Walsh & The Barn Dance Gang

Andy Walsh was one of the headliners / bandleaders on KSTP Sunset Valley Barn Dance.  These pictures are scanned from my copy of the book "David Stone in Sunset Valley", a coffee-table type book from 1983 about the history of the show and its artists.

An instrumental track called Guitar Boogie (b/w Spanish Two Step) was issued originally on the FM label, and also on Soma 1013.  Thanks to Dean for sharing the label scan.

Wally Horton

Bob the Scared Data Miner wrote:
Wally Horton played guitar for Hank Williams. He came from Alabama and was at the time of this release a country DJ on WISZ in Glen Burnie, Maryland (about five miles from Baltimore). With his own band, The Playboys, he performed in local clubs about three or four nights a week.

Also in 1965, Mount Rainier, MD Rebel Records issued a single by Wally Horton :

Rebel 251 : Heartbroken love b/w Where were you last night

Kardo Records was owned by Philip M. Carter of Odenton, MD

I couldn't find out where Wally's hometown was.

Kentucky New Era. February, 1948

l-r: Fern Dale, Ardis Wells, Jan North, Patti Williams
Ardis Wells passed away last February.  I had planned to visit her at her nursing home and post the interview along with all her records.  But I got too busy with grad school and lost a great opportunity to meet the queen of the Flame Cafe.

So I thought I'd upload all the images and audio that I have of her, in some sort of tribute. These records are from the mid fifties, except for the Azalea record which is from 1960.  Chuck Carson even makes an appearance on the Joyce 45, using his real name Krenz.

Apparently the Flame Cafe was split up into a front room with a bar, and the main dining room and another larger stage in the back.  Ardis Wells and Her Rhythm Ranch Girls played on top of the bar of the front room, and would have been the first thing people saw as they entered.  They must have been quite a thing to see, all dancing and singing together among the liquor bottles.
