Mac & Bob

Here are a few 78s of Lester McFarland and Robert A. Gardner. Notice anything strange about the above photo? They are looking at each other! Blind people usually don't do that. Guess the record company decided people wouldn't buy records from blind people. I can just imagine the photographer about to take the picture, saying to the musicians, "ok, fellas just look at each other as though you could see."

Will Hankins & The Berry Boys

I think this was the first real country record that Soma put out. Everything before this had been Polka, Norwegian or Jazz. This is actually Famous Lashua, using the pseudo Will Hankins. May 12, 1957 article in the Minneapolis Tribune mentions that he recorded the song. It's a mystery to me why Soma wouldn't have used his real name, since he was an established musician and radio DJ. I bet the radio station he worked at had some kind of contract with him, and Amos avoided the situation by using a pseudo. Johnny & Duane

1956 University Avenue is only one block from 1936 University Avenue, where North Star was. Two record companies within a block of each other. Pretty cool. 1956 address is now a temp agency, and 1936 is a parking lot.

Looked this one up in my Minnesota Rocked!! book and it says the catalog # is 2002. Obviously a mistake, which makes me question the rest of the info in that book. I've also found other errors, mostly misspelled artist names.
