Happy Holidays

Hope all who visit this blog have a good holiday, near a fireplace surrounded by people you sort of like most times, and hopefully some Xmas records.

After the new year, I am off to Washington D.C. to work as an intern until May. So I will be away from my record player and not able to do much blogging. I have a small backlog of mp3 files from my records saved to my laptop, but not enough to do daily postings. I can continue to post fresh links to past posts, by request.

Thanks for visiting,

Not sure exactly what year this was issued. The RCA Custom pressing matrix starts with Z, indicating a 1970 date. But this website's discography states it was recorded in 1971. He apparently also recorded the same 2 songs in 1966.

Vernon Dalhart

Bruce from Seattle was very kind to lend me his copy of Vernon Dalhart: First Star of Country Music. I am in the middle of it and find it to be a very good read, with an extensive discography which takes up almost half the book. Dalhart certainly was a hard worker in the studio.

Here are 2 records, one on the Herschel Gold Seal label. This label used masters from the Gennett record company, issuing 21 records in 1926-1927. Two of those 21 were of Dalhart.

I'll never be able to hear the song Golden Slippers without picturing grandpa Walton dancing around with Ester at their anniversary party.

Will someone please tell me why Bear Family chooses to release everything Jimmy Skinner ever did, while ignoring Dalhart? Jeez.

This looks like an RCA custom pressing, but I've never seen their catalog i.d. start with a number. It's always letters that denote the year. Maybe it means 1964 if it starts with a 4. I dunno.

Prom 1109

I assume this to be the forerunner to the Promenade label. The vinyl is heavy, with the higher quality grade that was used in the 1950s. Since both original versions of these songs were hits in 1955, I'm guessing this record was trying to capitalize during that same year. If anyone can prove me wrong, please speak up.

We got our first snowfall today in Minnesota.

Last year I posted a record with snow in title on the first day we got snow in Minnesota. I'd like to make it a tradition on this blog, as long as I can keep finding records with a snow theme.

The year 1964 holds the record for the earliest measurable snowfall. The white stuff fell on September 14th of that year, the same year this record was made.
