Cactus Slim

"The first cast member selected for the Barn Dance was Herbert Woodrow Wilson.  Known as Cactus Slim, he headlined the opening Sunset Valley broadcast.  Rail-thin, quiet and humble, Cactus Slim played string bass in the band and performed single vocals such as Little Red Wagon, accompanying himself on guitar.  Until his death late in the show's run, Cactus Slim was a mainstay of the cast." - (excerpt from the book "David Stone In Sunset Valley", copyright 1983 by Gerarld Barfuss)

I am not sure if there was more than one artist going by the name Cactus Slim.  Searches come up with another (or the same?) Cactus Slim, as The Lonesome Serenader.

other issues by Cactus Slim on the FM label, which I don't have yet:
FM 348 - My Little Red Wagon / I Walk Alone
FM 385 - Cowboy Polka / Barbara Polka

Slim Jim (6th post)

Slim Jim (r) and the Vagabond Kid (l), courtesy Hennepin County Library, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Many recording artists from Minnesota show up on the FM label, both as 78rpm and 45rpm.  Bruce Swedien, who was a pioneering recording engineer, opened a studio in an old movie theater in Minneapolis.  He was so good at his job, that he was lured to Chicago by big business record execs.  So he sold his business to Vernon Bank (I think in 1954, but am not sure), who changed the name to Kay Bank, after his wife Kay.  Vern Bank partnered with the Heilicher Brothers to build their own pressing plant in North Minneapolis.  But prior to all those events, recordings were issued on the FM label.  Many of the first records Soma issued were re-issues of titles first sold on the FM label.  I am still uncovering discs I hadn't know about, many of them by members of the KSTP Sunset Valley Barn Dance.  I have a few others to share, so stay tuned.

Marvin Lee

Marvin Lee was on a radio show called Cornbelt Country Style in 1964, which aired daily on WHOW, Clinton, Ill.

A notice for a 2012 t.v. show:
"The special guest Oct. 6 will be Marvin Lee, 79, from rural St. Joseph. Lee, whose last name is Flessner, had his own TV show from 1968 to 1975 on WCIA Channel 3 and for a decade did a show on Sunday nights at the Champaign County Fair."

Thanks to Bobthescareddataminer for the info.
