ARA C&W compiliation

I went to Cheapo Records in Minneapolis a while back and was browsing through their country music compilation section. There were a lot of companies who repackaged a lot of material at budget prices in the 60 and 70s. They often omitted information about the music, and it was common to just list the name of the song and leave it at that. I suppose you shouldn't expect much for late-night t.v. mail-order record sets. This set is 3 12'' discs. I don't know if there were more discs in the set, because there wasn't a sleave. Consequently, the guy at Cheapo gave me the discs for free when I asked about them. I took them home and found many songs I had not heard before. I have successfully identified some of the singers on the tunes, by comparing them to songs I already own in my iTunes.

I ask you all to download this set and listen to these songs, and if you can help me fill in any of the song info, I'd appreciate it. Here are a couple of the choice cuts by unknown artists. There are 30 tracks in all, of which I have identified 12. One of the real gems is "Sing Me A Song I Can Cry To", which I think is sung by High Pockets Busse & The Frontiersmen. I hope someone out there can either confirm or deny this. Here is a great documentary on Hi "pockets" Busse made by New Mexico public television when he was still alive

Sing Me A Song I Can Cry To (Hi Busse & The Frontiersmen???)

"Paper Love Affair" Is by Jimmy Dean & his Texas Wildcats originally recorded for 4-Star. This looks like a Biharri Brothers compilation.

Thanks Lance for filling in most of the missing links. So you're saying Paper Love Affair was originally released as a single on 4-star? Praguefrank lists it as being first issued on a King LP, but I know they often passed songs around.

Let me know if you ever see an image of the sleeve that came with these lps, or if there were more than 3 discs.

again thanks,
Derik

Although it was recorded for 4-Star it looks like it wasn't released by them. You're right though, they did pass the masters around. King must have had some agreement with 4-Star as a lot of their masters appeared on King (i.e. The Maddox Brothers And Rose, Hank Locklin, Webb Pierce, Charlie Ryan, etc).

The Biharri's must have had deals with a lot of different labels. In addition to the 4-Star Jimmy Dean cuts, they also also issued songs Johnny Horton recorded for Abbott, Sonny James on NRC, Rusty & Doug, Al Terry & Jimmy Newman on Feature. But the most intricate deal is the one they had with Woody Fleener's Sage & Sand label. Practically everything cut for Sage & Sand (later just known as Sage) was re-released on Crown or Modern.

Sage (CA) LP - 16 "Hillbilly Heaven" has Eddie Dean doing Tangled Lies on . This LP has overdubbed chrous. As "Love The Way You Say it was also from this LP, I'm putting 2 & 2 together and my guess guess is Tangled Lies = Eddie Dean. But I've never heard this LP

Also Crown (CA) LP -5507 "The Era Of Hank Williams" by Johnny Mac (1966) has "Going Down The Road" "Wreck Of The Ole 97" so are they Johnny Mac?

"I An Just A Drifting Dreamer" Poss = Crown (CA) LP - 5266 "Country Jamboree" (1962) Hal Wayne & The Frontiersmen? Again "Sing Me A Song I Can Cry To" is off this LP.

:Your Cheatin' Heart" could be "Billy Williams Crown LP - 5435 or Custom (owned by Crown) LP - 2023 "Johnny William? anybody confirm!
