Benny Martin

Floyd Cramer had his piano, Chet Atkins had his guitar, Bill Monroe had his mandolin, Kenny Buttrey had his drums, and Benny Martin had his fiddle. Benny invented and introduced his 8 string fiddle while he was recording for Decca. Hooray for innovation. Hope that makes up for the somewhat offensive lyrics. Might wanna cover your ears around the 1:10 mark, cause he lets all 8 strings go, Jimmy Hendrix style. I read also that Benny liked to dance around the stage while playing. Must have been quite a sight. Wonder if he ever fell off the stage?

Couldn't find a recording date for this one. I place it somewhere between 1955 and 1960.

Dylan around the time he recorded Self Portrait


In 1970, Bob Dylan was getting tired of fans obsessing over him and ruining his private life. So to defuse the hype, he released an album of covers. Many at the time were outraged, and rolling stone started out their review of the album with the words "what the fuck is this shit!?!"

But a closer listen shows that Dylan had always been tuned into to what was playing on the country and pop charts. Hearing the album made me want to hear the originals, of course, and I've assembled a good collection here. I don't know if these are the versions Dylan used as his inspiration, since many of the songs were done by many different artists. Back then, if one artist had a hit with a song, other artists would also record it, hoping to cash in.

Another compilation packed with rarities, put together in 1964 by Syndicate Records. I didn't bother with the more well known stuff such as Cash, Patsy Cline, Dave Dudley, and Charlie Ryan. I also passed over the T. Texas Tyler track "Deck of Cards", which I loathe because I am an agnostic and don't like it when religious folks get self-righteous. No offense to anyone.

So what's left are 25 great ones you might have trouble finding elsewhere. If you really want the songs I left out, leave a comment.
